(Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing)
EMDR is an established therapeutic technique, specially designed to enable you to safely process the thoughts and feelings associated with a traumatic issue. Some people may have several traumas that need to be processed.
You don’t need to talk throughout; the work is more about noticing what comes up for you.
EMDR specifically allows you to unfold the thoughts and feelings linked to trauma so that you can process them and hence, move on.
This treatment enables you to do what your mind and body could not do at the time of the trauma because the situation was overwhelming or something you had never experienced before.
I help couples understand and work towards improving their relationships, primarily using the Gottman Method. You may have issues around relationship breakdown, changes in sexual desire, intimacy, commitment, trust, infidelity, life changes or conflict, to name but a few concerns.
My role is to create an environment in which you can come together to find out if your relationship is right for you - whether it needs to change or open up.
I work with straight, gay and bisexual clients in monogamous and polyamorous relationships.
Additionally, I see people individually to work with a wide range of psychosexual issues such as erection difficulties, vaginismus, menopause, painful sex, low desire, sexually compulsive behaviours, sexual/emotional control and coercion, sexual abuse, high sex drive, porn use, bisexuality and sexual identity issues. All my work is trauma informed.
Couples therapy typically involves seeing the couple together but I will also see individuals separately to discuss particular issues and integrate these individual sessions into the couples work.
For couples therapy, I focus on helping partners build healthy relationships, where possible. I will help you understand and improve friendship, communication and conflict patterns. I currently also finishing a Sex and Relationships Diploma and am CORST registered.
This a short solution-focused form of therapy that typically lasts three to five sessions. It involves easing you into a relaxed state, a place between being awake and asleep, making it possible for me to work more effectively with your problems on a deeper subconscious level.
Sessions are adapted to your particular needs and what you want from hypnotherapy. When you are relaxed, I will use different messages, suggestions, metaphors and techniques tailored to your situation, with a view towards challenging and overcoming the limiting beliefs and/or negative experiences that are holding you back.
Hypnotherapy helps with all kinds of problems, such as stress and anxiety, depression, sex and relationship issues, job concerns, addictions, weight loss, pain control and performance anxiety.
All clients are welcome to a free, no-obligation 30-minute telephone consultation, during which we will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, your goals and identify which form of treatment is best suited to your needs. Once I understand the specific type of support you require, I will then walk you through what to expect from the therapeutic plan devised and schedule your first session.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy technique designed to help individuals process and overcome traumatic memories and associated distress.
The therapy involves recalling traumatic events while the therapist guides the client's eye movements or offers other bilateral stimulation, such as taps or sounds.
This connects the right and left side of the brain and allows for the rational and creative power of the mind to work together: this process aids in the brain's natural adaptive information processing mechanisms, allowing the distress associated with traumatic memories (held in the nervous system) to be reduced, leading to improved mental health.
Hypnotherapy works by placing the individual in a state of deep relaxation, often referred to as a trance state, during which they are more receptive to positive change.
This allows the therapist to access the subconscious mind and introduce new ways of thinking, feeling, or behaving, which can help address various issues, from anxiety to addiction.
These changes can then become more embedded through consistent sessions, effectively assisting the individual in overcoming their concerns.
EMDR and Hypnotherapy are very powerful and effective – both on their own and as a combination treatment. They have both shown effectiveness in treating various psychological disorders.
EMDR is widely recognised for its success in treating PTSD and trauma-related issues, with numerous clinical studies affirming its effectiveness.
Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, has proven beneficial in addressing issues such as anxiety, stress, phobias, and certain behavioural habits like smoking.
As with all therapies, effectiveness can vary between individuals, and it's always best to consult with a licensed professional to determine the most suitable treatment approach.
The timeframe for seeing results from EMDR and Hypnotherapy can vary greatly, depending on the individual and the complexity of the issues being addressed. Some people may notice a significant shift in their symptoms or behaviour after just a few sessions, while others may need a series of sessions over several weeks or months.
It's essential to remember that everyone's healing process is unique, and a trained professional can provide a more personalised timeline based on your specific circumstances and goals.
As a general guide, EMDR usually lasts between 6 -12 sessions. Hypnotherapy treatment is much shorter and clients typically have 3 - 5 sessions.
EMDR and Hypnotherapy are versatile therapies that can treat a range of conditions. EMDR is particularly effective for trauma-related conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD and C-PTSD). EMDR is also being increasingly used to treat conditions such as complex grief, general anxiety, relationship and sexual issues and low self-esteem.
Hypnotherapy can address issues like anxiety, phobias, and habits like smoking. Both therapies can also be used to manage stress, depression, and pain, and to improve self-esteem and performance. Always consult with a qualified professional to determine the best approach for your specific needs.
Yes, EMDR and Hypnotherapy can be used together in a treatment plan. The synergy of these two therapies can be particularly beneficial for people dealing with trauma or anxiety-related disorders.
EMDR helps to process traumatic memories, while Hypnotherapy can reinforce positive coping strategies and behaviour changes. The combination should be guided by a professional therapist for optimal results.
Hypnotherapy is a highly effective way of enabling an individual to visualise and embed positive outcomes or solutions. This is an integral part of EMDR.
While both EMDR and Hypnotherapy are generally safe, some individuals may experience temporary side effects.
After EMDR sessions, it's common to have vivid, realistic dreams, heightened awareness, or experience emotional or physical sensations associated with traumatic memories. With Hypnotherapy, one might experience dizziness, headache, or feeling disoriented post-session.
Remember, these side effects are temporary and often subside after a few hours or days. Always consult with a trained professional for tailored advice.
